The United Nations estimates that approximately one-third of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, the primary driver of climate change, stem from our food choices. While the common advice to reduce our diet’s environmental impact is to consume more plants and fewer animal products, there are numerous other food choices that can also influence the environment and contribute to global warming. Making informed decisions at the grocery store can play a significant role in mitigating climate change. For instance, swapping one serving of chicken for beef per day can nearly halve the emissions associated with a diet, as ruminant animals like cows, sheep, and goats are major contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. Processed animal products, such as cheese, have a higher environmental impact compared to less processed foods like milk. Opting for plant-based proteins like legumes, beans, and nuts can substantially reduce the climate impact of our diets.
