Empowering Nonprofits Through Data Science Internships

Three UTSA students, Avery Tovar, Kayla Duran, and Gabriella Gomez, recently collaborated with the YWCA of San Antonio during their internship as part of the H-E-B Community Innovation Scholars program. This initiative, supported by H-E-B in partnership with the United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County, aims to empower nonprofits by leveraging the power of data science to address real-world challenges. The students worked on analyzing workforce program success through a data-driven lens, highlighting the importance of data in enhancing services and decision-making within organizations.

Throughout the 10-week internship, the students engaged in various activities such as cleaning datasets, conducting statistical and geospatial analysis, and developing web-based tools to present their findings effectively. Despite initial challenges in coding skills, the interns, particularly Gomez and Duran, showcased tremendous growth and adaptability, emphasizing the value of hands-on learning experiences in honing technical abilities and problem-solving skills. The project not only provided them with practical insights into data science but also instilled a sense of confidence and persistence in tackling complex challenges.

One of the key hurdles faced by the team was the analysis of small or incomplete datasets, leading to a lack of representation for underrepresented populations. Tovar, reflecting on her Native American background, underscored the significance of ensuring diverse representation in data analysis. The interns recognized the human stories behind the data, emphasizing the importance of viewing participants as individuals with unique experiences and goals rather than mere data points. This approach not only added depth to their analysis but also underscored the ethical responsibility of data scientists in promoting inclusivity and equity.

The internship experience not only equipped the students with technical skills but also offered valuable insights into the potential of data science to drive social impact and community empowerment. Duran expressed how the internship clarified her professional aspirations, emphasizing her newfound understanding of utilizing data for meaningful change and community development. Tovar highlighted the transformative nature of the experience, emphasizing the role of data science in promoting social justice and equity, beyond its technical applications. The collaboration with the YWCA served as a testament to the broader societal implications of data science, showcasing its capacity to uplift underserved populations and drive positive change.

As the H-E-B Community Innovation Scholars program transitions to the College of AI, Cyber, and Computing, the impact of such initiatives on bridging technical expertise with social consciousness becomes increasingly apparent. The collaboration between students and nonprofits not only enhances data literacy within organizations but also cultivates a deep commitment to community equity and social responsibility among aspiring data scientists. Moving forward, the YWCA plans to build on this collaboration, identifying areas for improvement and fostering continued progress in leveraging data science for social good.

Key Takeaways:
– Data science internships offer valuable hands-on experience in applying technical skills to real-world challenges within nonprofit organizations.
– Inclusivity and ethical considerations are essential in data analysis to ensure diverse representation and equitable outcomes.
