Astellas Pharma Employee Sentenced for Espionage in China: A Look at the Controversial Case

Recently, a Japanese employee of Astellas Pharma was sentenced to three years and six months in prison for espionage in China. Despite the ruling, the employee chose not to appeal by the deadline. The incident dates back to March 2023 when the employee was detained by Chinese authorities just before returning to Japan. The relatively light sentence received by the Astellas employee has raised questions, with some speculating that it may be part of efforts to improve relations between China and Japan under the administration of President Xi Jinping.
