Pontifical Catholic University Inaugurates $13 Million Science Building

The Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico (PUCPR) recently completed the construction of its new Science building, the Dr. Gabriel A. Infante Méndez, with an investment exceeding $13 million. This modern structure, to be utilized starting this semester, adds over 30,000 square feet of specialized biology and chemistry laboratories, positioning the institution as a key player in scientific research on the island. The President of PUCPR, José A. Frontera Agenjo, emphasized that this project aims to strengthen academic training in the sciences and expand job opportunities for graduates.

The infrastructure improvements plan at PUCPR also includes the refurbishment of the Alfonso Valdés building and the modernization of Nursing and Cardiovascular Technology laboratories. The Dean of the College of Sciences, Dr. Alma L. Santiago Cortés, highlighted that the new building houses state-of-the-art laboratories benefiting programs such as Biology, Biotechnology, Environmental Sciences, Chemistry, Biomedical Sciences, Medical Technology, Nursing, and Applied Data Science. Additionally, laboratories in other facilities like the Ferré building will be revamped, and simulation spaces in healthcare areas will be enhanced.

This multi-million dollar investment will enhance the practical experience and academic development of students, ensuring they are exposed to the same technology used in medical schools. The Vice President of Infrastructure Development, Armando Rodríguez Torres, emphasized that the building’s design integrates study spaces, a new electrical substation, an emergency generator, and preparation for installing solar panels as part of the university’s energy resilience strategy. PUCPR has long been a pioneer in health sciences and technology programs. Their Nursing Bachelor’s program was the first accredited in Puerto Rico in 1963, while the Medical Technology Bachelor’s program began in 1968. Today, the institution boasts six buildings and three additional research centers in the scientific field, including the Center for Education and Research in Biotechnology and Agrobiotechnology (CEIBA).

The university aims to continue forming research teams that address society’s needs, such as food security and agricultural development, while providing experiences that open up graduate-level opportunities within and outside Puerto Rico. With these new facilities, the Pontifical Catholic University strengthens its commitment to interdisciplinary education aligned with the demands of the job market. This strategic investment not only enhances the educational experience for current and future students but also solidifies the institution’s position as a hub for cutting-edge research and innovation in the scientific community.
