Utilizing Medical Marijuana in Cancer Treatment

Recent studies have highlighted the various ways in which medical marijuana, specifically cannabinoids, can aid in the fight against cancer. One of the earliest FDA-approved uses of THC was in the drug dronabinol, which helps combat chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV). These symptoms not only cause discomfort but can also impact nutrition and treatment adherence. Cannabinoids interact with the brain’s endocannabinoid system to alleviate nausea and increase appetite. Clinical trials, including those summarized in a National Cancer Institute review, have demonstrated that cannabinoids are at least as effective, if not more effective, than traditional antiemetic drugs in managing these side effects. The potential of medical marijuana in cancer treatment continues to be a topic of interest and research in the medical community.
