Janelia scientists have developed ultra-fast genetically encoded calcium indicators that detect calcium ions released from neurons. The movie showcases jGCaMP8 indicators tracking response in L2 neurons of the fruit fly visual system’s ‘off’ pathway. The top image displays pixel intensity changes in L2 neurons as light intensity varies, while the bottom graph illustrates mean intensity changes in the specified region of interest when light is turned on or off. This breakthrough technology enables real-time monitoring of calcium concentrations and neuronal responses with high temporal resolution.
